|Six Degrees of the Enlightenment |
Many of you have heard of Kevin Bacon. He
is most famous for his role as the lead character in the
movie version of “Footloose.” His involvement in
over 50 films and plays has spawned a game named
in his honor: “Six degrees of Kevin Bacon.”
The game is very simple and based on the
belief that there isn’t an actor in any movie that
cannot be traced back to Kevin Bacon through six
people or fewer. For example, connect Kevin Bacon to
Pierce Brosnan (James Bond). All you have to do is link actors together by the movies they costar in. Say Pierce Brosnan and Robin Williams in "Mrs. Doubtfire." Robin Williams and John Lithgow in "The World According to Garp." John Lithgow and Kevin Bacon in "Footloose." (This is a score of a “3” because the connection was made with a total of 3 people).
Your project will be to play “Six degrees of the Enlightenment.” (Try to hold back your enthusiasm!) This will be done in pairs or threes. Your group will pick an important European figure from 1940-2007 period and connect him/her to a major Enlightenment thinker. Each step of the way, you must explain the connection, influence, and relationship that they had to one another, as well as explain each individual’s importance and contributions to European society. The connections must be real and not superficial!
This will take quite a bit to thinking on your part to come up with the connections and to show that they are truly connected. Each person must CLEARLY have been influenced by the earlier individual’s work.
Example of what is NOT good enough:
Adolf Hitler was influenced by Hobbes because Hobbes wanted a strong, absolute leader to rule a country.
Example of what is good: (taken from a time period outside of this assignment): Connect Philip II of Spain to Thomas More through their religious beliefs. Connect Philip II to Bloody Mary to King Henry VIII to Thomas More. Of course, your explanation will not be non-existent as this one is.
You will be required to do the following things for your 30 point grade.
Your grade will be based on:
