Survey of the history, religion, and culture of Muslim societies. Includes the Middle East in the Sixth

Century CE, Muhammad and Qur'an, Islam and the Islamic State, Fatamids, Seljuks, and the

Crusades, Mongols, Mamlue Egypt, and the Ottoman Turks.

Performance Objectives:

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  1. Describe the people, cultures, and geography of pre-Islamic Middle East.

  2. Analyze the key events and terminology of the Islamic faith.

  3. Describe the formative caliphates.

  4. Identify and discuss the major dynasties, rulers, and political developments of the Medieval Middle East.

  5. Describe the Mongol and Mamluk conquests and the rise of the Ottoman Empire.
